Hurricane Andrew is the second most destructive hurricane in United States history. Hurricane Andrew was the first named hurricane of the 1992 Atlantic hurricane season, and it struck in August.

Andrew damaged areas in the northwestern Bahamas, South Central Louisiana and Southern Florida area, south of Miami.

The total amount of damage in cost, caused by Hurricane Andrew, was totaled at billion in 1992 dollars. Most of the damage was in South Florida though.

Hurricane Andrew - Facts and Information About the Hurricane

A total of 65 people died from it, and countless were injured. The central pressure ranking of Hurricane Andrew was the fourth lowest in U.S. landfall history.
Hurricane Andrew's Beginnings

Andrew started as a tropical wave from Africa, which spawned a tropical depression, which then became Tropical Storm Andrew the next day.

The storm actually almost dissipated on August 20, but then when it was midway between Bermuda and Puerto Rico, it began turning westward into a much more favorable environment.

Andrew made landfall twice while it was moving through the Bahamas. The storm then was made weakened after it made landfall the second time. It maintained strong winds though and the pressure kept rising.

However while it was crossing the Gulf Stream, it gained strength quickly and became a Category 5 hurricane briefly while it made landfall over South Florida on August 24, with the pressure being at 922 mbar and wind speeds of 165 miles per hour.

Hurricane Andrew then continued in the westward direction, towards the Gulf of Mexico, as a Category 4 hurricane, where it then gradually turned north.

This brought the hurricane to central Louisiana's coast on August 26th, by then though it was only a Category 3. It then turned north east and merged with a front system over the Mid-Atlantic States. As of 2007, Hurricane Andrew has only been surpassed by 3 hurricanes, those being the Labor Day hurricane in 1935, Hurricane Camille in 1969 and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Anger In Society Today

In this day and age, anger is a major player in every society. People are driven by anger, meaning that they do not have any self control and the decisions made by them are actually decisions made by anger. We could even go so far as to call society an 'Anger Driven Society', where everyone is prone to anger outbursts.

If we observe our society for a while, we may be astonished to see that even children and teenagers are prone to anger outbursts as well. They are turning their negative energy into negative ways by attempting suicide, substance abuse, getting involved in violent activities, drinking alcohol, and so forth. Anger management is an issue that faces people of all ages and backgrounds. This is evident by the number of adolescent and teen anger management programs that are becoming commonplace. There are even free anger management advice lines for parents with troublesome pre-school kids.

Stress is playing a greater role in life nowadays and the stressors are so many that one may almost feel incapable of coping with them. The result is that each and every person is in a potentially hostile mood and if their trigger point is just slightly pressed, they will go out of control. This is not an example of a healthy society, and we should seek ways and means of anger management to turn all our negative energies collectively into positive energies and protect the foundations of a peaceful society.

Anger In Society Today

On a governmental level, every country's officials are angry amongst themselves and everybody wants things to go their way. Religious leaders throughout the world can be as angry as anyone and they want to impose religion on everyone. But let's also remember that no religion teaches it is correct to impose things on anyone or talk rudely to anyone, or deceive someone, or to steal from someone, or to cheat someone, or to hurt someone. I can go on and on with the list and it will never end.

Every one of us is subjected, I guess almost daily, to some situations in which we just get mad and express ourselves in a negative way and think that our anger will resolve the issue. We expect someone will be intimidated by our anger and will do what we want them to, but it does not happen like this, it is not normal and the general point of view is that such people are in need of strong anger management therapy.

Honesty and decency is the best policy, but today, it is very difficult for an honest and decent person to survive in such society, because an honest person cannot hurt or cheat anyone. They expect honesty from everybody else that they are dealing with and they reserve the right of getting angry and reacting to the situation, in which they are being deceived, but they do not lose their control and never forget their principles of anger management.

They will often use diplomacy and negotiation as their main anger management techniques and call upon other anger management skills to enable them to ensure that their will does prevail, but without resorting to violence or dishonest means. If more people were to adopt this way of thinking then the world would be a better place to live in and honesty would be seen as the decent quality that it is, and not as some form of weakness as is often the case.

So, here's a suggestion for everyone - let's fight the negative energy, with all our might, and let's be the first ones to take the steps towards positive thoughts and deeds in our anger ridden society, to make it a better place for the generations to come.

What The Bible Says About The Poor Widow Is Not What You Were Taught

What the Bible says about the poor widow in the temple is often used as an model of sacrificial Christian giving.

This is what I learned in Sunday School. When I went to Sunday School, the major topic of many of our opening exercises was raising money for the poor. We made little church-shaped cardboard boxes to hold our nickels and dimes so that we could help buy chickens or a cow for people in some poor village somewhere. Every Thanksgiving, we were supposed to collect food for the poor. And so we brought in cans of green beans and boxes of Jell-O to donate to the poor. We heard many times about the poor widow who gave everything she had to live on as an example of what God wanted us to do.

This kind of interpretation of the Bible story about the poor widow is a drastic misinterpretation of the teachings of Jesus about money.

What The Bible Says About The Poor Widow Is Not What You Were Taught

A widow in ancient Palestine was in a very vulnerable financial condition. Most people lived in patriarchal family units on hereditary family land, under the authority of the ruling adult male. Women lived under the authority and protection of men. Unmarried women remained at home under the authority of their fathers. Married women lived under the authority and protection of their husbands.

While some widows in Palestine were citizens of Rome, with greater legal and financial resources, most widows were extremely vulnerable. Most widows had no legal standing and no resources of their own. For this reason, the Torah always recognized widows as a special class of people who needed protection.

In both Mark 12:38-44 and Luke 20:45-47; 21:1-4, the story of the poor widow comes immediately after Jesus's condemnation of the practices of the Scribes. The Scribes were the legal scholars. They were the experts on the oral and written Torah. In both Mark and Luke, Jesus comments on the poor widow after describing the Scribes as those who "devour the houses of widows."

Unless she was a Roman citizen, a widow had no legal status to manage the property and money her husband had left behind. After a man's death, the Scribes would appoint a pious man to handle the widow's financial affairs. The implication of the story is that the Scribes were using their status as experts in the law to defraud the widows out of their property. The Scribes who were supposed to protect her had left her with only two tiny coins to live on.

This story Jesus tells about the poor widow is consistent with his condemnation of the religious system, which defrauded the poor widows. It is also consistent with his condemnation of the practices of the rich because of their exploitation of the poor. He compares the contributions of the rich with the tiny contribution of the widow as a way to criticize the rich. Although the very rich gave large sums of money, what they gave made no difference in the way they lived. They gave out of their abundance. However, she gave all she had to live on.

When Christian teaching separates the story of the widow from the comment about the Scribes who devour the houses of widows, it misses the point of the teachings of Jesus about money.

This is not a story telling the poor to give away everything they have. It is a story about an unjust system in which the poorest and most vulnerable were being exploited by the rich and powerful.

What Sunday School taught me about this story distorts the point of the original story and creates fear and lack in the ones Jesus intended to liberate.

The words about the poor widow need to be put back into the context of the whole story of Jesus in his campaign to proclaim the Kingdom of God for the benefit of the poorest and most vulnerable. This story does not teach the most vulnerable of the society to give away everything they have. In fact, this story is a condemnation of a religious system that robbed widows of their money.
