Highly Sensitive People - Traits and Characteristics

One in every twenty people is considered to be a highly sensitive person (HSP). This means that either you yourself may be sensitive or someone you know is. 42% of the population is not highly sensitive, meaning that most things don't bother them the way they will an HSP. Everyone else falls somewhere in between, with the odd few being completely unemotional about anything. (By the way - 20% of the entire animal kingdom is highly-sensitive as well).

Who are HSP's and What Are They Like?

News And Society

We're the thinkers, the cautious ones, the conservative people; the ones that say "Hey, wait a minute. Let's think this through before doing something rash."

Highly Sensitive People - Traits and Characteristics

Every society needs highly sensitive people, just as we need the warriors, the leaders who are ready to take the risks. However, we're the ones that help to temper the not-so-sensitive types, the ones who can be bold, rash and impulsive and may have not thought things through to the consequences of their actions. Highly sensitive people are most often the people found in the roles of advisors, counselors and advocators for restraint.

Unfortunately, in western society, we've also been labeled as somewhat "defective", according the way non-hsp's see us. We're considered "too sensitive, too cautious, too shy, too timid, too introverted, too fearful." What needs to be realized is that these are not "problems" that need to be corrected and fixed with sensitive people. It's the labels that are attached to us that cause the problems. Many non-sensitive people are also shy, timid, introverted and fearful, while there are many highly sensitive people who are out-going, super-friendly, extroverted, and risk-takers. We just tend to think things through first and weigh all the factors that our senses pick up on before forging ahead.

Traits and Characteristics Misinterpreted

So, what are some of the traits and characteristics of a highly sensitive person? Let's look at some of the facts and the mythical labels that have been attached to this special group.

Shyness

- You'll probably find a larger portion of shy people in the HSP group. That does not mean that everyone is shy. That's a myth. A lot of non-sensitive people are also shy. Sometimes, what's mistaken as shyness is actually a sizing up of the situation and the people that we have just met. We're cautious. If our senses are saying something isn't right about the person, we won't be so open to them. First impressions count. It's not just the way the person is dressed, but their whole demeanor, aura, attitude and other little subtleties that we absorb with all of our senses. We process the thoughts, feelings and sensations that we receive in each new situation. This may make some of us appear "shy", when we're not.

Introverted

- Somewhat of a myth. You'll find many HSP's can be extroverted, out-going and fun-loving. You'll also find many non-sensitive people as being introverted. Don't mistake deep-thinking and inner-reflection as introversion. We do require much more alone time. This is because our nervous systems can go into over-load in a situation that a non-sensitive person would find somewhat stimulating. If we become frazzled and over-stimulated, we need to find a quiet spot as soon as possible to settle back down. This is why many HSP's tend to stay at home more often than not, rather than go out to party. It's not that we don't want to... we just know our systems can't handle the overload for too long a time. If we can't get away, we'll pull into ourselves, as a sort of protective shield, to try to reduce the noise, sights, sounds and smells that are bombarding us in order to calm down.

Fearfulness

- Unless you're completely unemotional and have a lack of conscious consideration toward others, who can say that they've never been fearful at times? This is not an exclusive trait of sensitive people. New experiences often cause butterflies, fearful thoughts and inner-turmoil in most people. HSP's just tend to feel those emotions more deeply.

Timidness

- Caution, careful evaluation of the situation, needing the see the "entire picture", and the possible resulting consequences of our actions is just in our nature. If everyone heedlessly rushed into everything, we'd have even more chaos in our world than we do now.

Too-Sensitive

- Yes, this is our major trait. We assimilate everything around us at once. Lights, noises, smells, energy vibrations, they all get absorbed, processed and evaluated. Unfortunately when there's too much activity and noise around us, we can't handle it for a great length of time. For example, what may be a low to moderate level of music for a non-sensitive person could sound like the level of a rock concert to us. Emotionally, we're affected by much of the disharmony in the world. We feel another person's heartache, we are aware of low levels of anger or resentment in a room, we empathize with other people's problems, and feel great sorrow over horrific tragedies.

What Does All This Mean?

A highly sensitive person will pick up on subtleties in the surroundings that many non-sensitive people can't see or feel. This can give us some great advantages. It can save us in many situations where there's trouble brewing. Our abilities can keep us from making disastrous business or personal decisions, if we follow our instincts. And because of our deep sense of the environment around us, we're often the ones that make others aware of potential environmental problems that unscrupulous companies ignore for their own benefits. HSP's are often the ones that push for reforms and changes in government law for the better good of everyone.

As with anything, it's good to know that you're not alone, that there are others out there that have to deal with the same types of situations and "labels" as you do. True, it doesn't hurt any less, but you know there are similar types that you can seek out and talk to...and they'll understand. Yes, we do tend to exhibit more of the above traits and characteristics than non-sensitive people do, but we're not exclusive owners of them either. Sometimes, it's a misinterpetation of what's really going on in the mind of an HSP by non-HSP's. Only another highly sensitive person could really understand. The good news is that highly sensitive people have been around for as long as man has walked the earth... and we'll always be here, working to make the world a more understanding, considerate and peaceful haven for everyone.

What is a Monocultural Society?

Do you live in a mono-cultural or multi-cultural society?. Often we find it difficult to define. What is a mono- cultural society?

Most experts agree that the essential traits of a mono-cultural society are a common heritage, belief structure, language and usually a mono-racial identity. Since we live in a more globalized World, many of our societies are essentially multi-cultural. But still many of today's societies still share the common traits of a mono-cultural society.

News And Society

What are these common traits?

What is a Monocultural Society?

1. A common heritage

The historical heritage of the society could be based on a perception that the nations, food, language, attitudes, racial features and religious beliefs are an essential element to the nations identity.

2. A shared belief structure

The majority of the citizens of a country have a shared belief structure, based on the nation's heritage. These beliefs form the national identity, and 'psyche,' which create to many a stronger bonded society, but to detractors a nation which loses out on the benefits of a multi-cultural ethnic society.

3. An inward looking 'psyche'

To many, mono-cultural societies tend to look inwards, rather than outwards, and this can show in the nation's culture. Television programs and news tends to be locally centered, and the cultures identity heavily promoted. A degree of ignorance of the outside World is often a product of looking inwards.

4. A suspicion of "foreigners"

The 'psyche" of a mono-cultural society often can be suspicious towards "foreigners," and unacceptable of their beliefs. This could lead to discouraging multi-cultural partnerships, to a 'ghetto' mentality of separating cultures through the areas they can live.

5. Common religious values

Whilst in some societies religion is seen as being less important, other cultures see it as part of their national or ethnic identity. A strong mono-cultural official religion often is a strong trait of a this type of society..

6. Tribalism

Citizens of strong multi-cultural societies tend to be more tribal when they live outside their own culture. Multi- cultural marriages are unacceptable, the neighbors, the food and even the workplace tends to be 'tribal." - the influence of the new society lessened by this strong cultural bond, between others who share it.

7. Purchasing Goods

Mono- cultural societies tend to support their own products, rather than purchase products from other nations. They tend to be proud of their industries, and economic achievements- encouraging buying nationally produced products over others. This is beneficial in a recession, but in an expanding economy can hinder the choice consumers have.

Mono-cultural societies tend to feel safer, as long as you are identified as "one of the group," but also conservative when it comes to accepting change. Whilst threatened, these societies tend to bond together faster, but also can be guilty of the worse types of ethnic abuse.

Historic examples could be the Armenian holocaust by Turkey, or the past bloodshed in the Balkans, and Rwanda- Events that generally do not occur in more modern multi-ethnic societies, which accept the differences in ideas, and beliefs.

Recessions often create a more mono-cultural outlook in societies, were suddenly even in multi-cultural societies fault lines can appear- often in the guise of competition for jobs and economic rights. However despite economic hardship, without the color, music and openness of a multi-cultural society- we would live in a very dull and limited World.

HAR1 - The Special Human Gene and Why it Could Be the Real Pandora's Box

HAR 1 - Special Gene - Only Human - From the Stars, Evolution, Aliens or God?

They have recently drawn a name for the only gene that humans have that is not also in other mammals. For those misanthropes among us, you could say: "Aha, the killer, war making gene", but for the rest of us less enlightened it is the peace making, come let us reason together, let's draw pictures in the sand and make love, just because we can gene. Whatever makes us human. Now that's a complicated one. I can't wait until they can study this gene more. A world of contradictory complexities I bet.

News And Society

I Feel More Like I Do Now Than I Did When I Came In

HAR1 - The Special Human Gene and Why it Could Be the Real Pandora's Box

There is an old backward drunken phrase from the denizen of those kinds of thoughts - Texas. It makes perfect sense to a drunk. And it seems quite appropriate at this point in the Human DNA discussion. After years studying the human genome (only 5% is really accessible and comprehensive to us right now) There is this "HAR 1" that is only human. Scientists can stare at it and philosophers and ponderers and religionists can go cross-eyed speculating about it. The point is: It was there a very long time ago. And it is with us now. Perhaps it is the thing that keeps on making us progress (technologically, industrially, scientifically). So, "we feel more like we do now than we did when we came in". This HAR 1 declares by its very existence that there is a genetic distinction that makes us human. It is not in any other creature, no other mammal. Of course, this only begins the discussion, and that's where I intend to start.

Quick, Quick, With The Arguments

"When we came in". Now there is where the contention begins. There is the creationist take: God said, "I'm gonna make me a man!" And the HAR 1 started. Evolutionists say: "Throw some millions of years around and it could evolve". Alien Incursionists/Interventionists claim. "It came from outer space". Thus, HAR 1 is probably one of the key remnants of the alien DNA that we got when they said: "We are going to make us a homo sapien from this here Ape."

The point of this article is not to try to reconcile these arguments, or to persuade one or two to go over to the other point of view. That would be like trying to get a Buddhist, a Western Hedonist Secularist and an Islamist to agree. But rather this HAR 1 is the part of our code that ALLOWS us to argue.

HAR 1 - "Hardee harhar". "What you say?" "We are so much more civilized than those guys over there."

This guy is the thing that allows us to laugh. Do dogs laugh? (Forget hyenas for the moment). Amazement, scorn and awe. These are the human things that make this life worth living. Whenever this HAR 1 came in, or got configured or evolved, it made us distinctly "children of God", "Alien subdudes" or highly evolved "tricky dicky Apes". Again, however it happened, it made us us. It made us able to argue, pose subjective points of view, invent religion, establish science, think of the idea of research, write books about behavior, create traditions of law, love, civilization and war. It allows us to become skeptical, superior, arrogant, noisome irritating obnoxious types or "loverly" little girls.

The fact that we came up with the ability to stare down into the Human Genome came from HAR 1 is what is amazing. The fact that no one has told us about "beginnings" means that it is through HAR 1 that we can even discuss beginnings. Taken to its height. You can see how HAR 1 has led us to kill with justification in the act of war. The nuances of law and they are nuanced, all must tip their hat to the human ability to reason, make distinctions decide why this exceptional point should rule, and why this less than elegant point should dominate. The ability to decide between the irreconcilable and come to a new epiphany from a mass of confusing data.

Self Interest, Social Interest and Human Interest

HAR 1, the only element that is distinctive from animals, is an elegant gift because it allows us to be selfish, to be socially concerned and to be aware of all of us --- and we can do them all at the same time. And just like fighting for Democracy means you may be fighting for the freedom of a man who wants to spit on your grave, HAR 1 means that we can conjure up dreams from animalistic imagination to create a reason for pushing citizens into special situations that they were not born to -- all in the name of some "good". And so, if you want to give yourself a headache, think of all the things that mankind does that are first engendered because they come from some good (and how bad they end up being for most). This little DNA construction is probably likened to a famous Greek Symbol.

Pandora's Box

People have been writing about the symbolism of Pandora's Box for generations. I would like to pose another. The study of the Human Genome as the decades go on will be the source of so much confusion, clarity, argument and insight, that we can not possibly see it now. But, alas, as the decades have passed, I predict that the Study of the Human Genome will be the Ultimate Pandora's Box.

What is your HAR 1 Rating?

Perhaps at some time in the future a test will be devised which can demonstrate how much or how highly or how sophisticatedly you use your HAR 1.

"I have a 95 rating, what is yours?"

"They say he was a great guy, but his HAR 1 rating was ridiculously low. His epitaph will be that he was a fantastic actor."

"They say that her HAR 1 rating is so high that it is difficult for her to even socialize with the rest of us low lifes"

"Everybody in that family had super low HAR 1, then outcomes this great humanistic artist".

Infallible?

Just a few years ago, you would have a very hard time even explaining "cap and trade" and why those taxes should even exist. Just a few decades ago, the idea that there should be laws with a "social conscience" was very far from most people's consciousness. This HAR 1 makes us human, but you know what I know? It does not make us infallible. Because we are fallible, and the most fallible are the ones who think they are not fallible. A whole line of research could be developed over how our sense of righteousness, importance, intelligence and profundity all lead us down very dark roads. As you think about being human, and what ultimately the study of HAR 1 might reap, is that it leads us inevitably with the challenge that we have been fighting with over the millennia: "How do we reconcile what we feel we know?"

And this doubt should inform us. It might be advisable to think about where humility and modesty and self-reflection come from. Perhaps that will be the ultimate legacy of HAR 1. When we can delve more deeply into our biological makeup and thus the psychological profile of homo sapien, maybe we will discover oddities, profundities and sensibilities that make us fall back in dismay, or reach for the stars in triumph. No one knows, but you have to admit it is an incredible mystery.

Getting Rid of Migraine Headaches With Reflexology

Migraine sufferers often wince in remembered pain of their last headache on hearing the word "migraine".

In one year, it is estimated that 90% of the population get at least one headache, and about 18% of the population will suffer from a migraine headache at some point in their life - that means that 1,231,291,260 people or over 1.25 billion worldwide know what it is like to experience a migraine.

The World Health Organization has estimated that in 2003 over three hundred million people worldwide were migraineurs. They even suggested a year later that there could be more than 20 million people suffering from migraine attacks every single day.

Approximately 13% of US population are migraine sufferers who lose their work time and are unable to perform at their best due to these migraine headaches which may be really painful and unbearable.

Many migraine cases relate to intolerance of food. It is usual for attacks to start in the morning and last, in their acute stage, between 3 and 24 hours. Symptoms can be quite varied pulsating pain, loss of appetite, sensitivity to light, pain localized to one side of head (hemicranial), vomiting, numbness, tingling, weakness, facial pain (trigeminal neuralgia), sweating, chills and sometimes spasmodic abdominal pains. Migraine is a neurological and chronic disorder characterized by nausea, eye pain, neck strain, back pain & headaches that may last from 2 to 72 hours.

Even after the migraine episode has subsided, there are usually migraine 'leftovers' which can leave you not feeling your best for quite a while.

Reflexology is a safe and effective drugless therapy for migraineurs.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is the practice of applying alternating pressure techniques to different areas of the body, most usually feet and hands, that corresponds to certain body parts, organs and glands. By stimulating nerves in various areas of the feet or hands, blood flow can be stimulated, stress can be lowered and toxins can be eliminated in the corresponding body systems. Using this method many forms of disease and ill health can be relieved.

Is there any research to back up these claims? Yes!

One such study was set to determine the effectiveness of Reflexology for Migraine and Tension Headaches. A doctor examined the two hundred and twenty patients selected for the study, and determined that headaches were their primary problem. Having established this as a base line the study progressed. Reflexology sessions were given over a three month period, and patients were required to complete questionnaires before and after the treatment session.

The results - were that 16% no longer had any form of headaches, 65% reported that Reflexology had helped to reduce the symptoms, and only 18% reported no changed. The conclusion of the study was that Reflexology was able to totally relieve or help tension and migraine headaches in a substantial number of study participants.

What reflexology does first and foremost is reduce the negative results of stress. It is said that 80% all diseases are stress related. When someone enjoys a reflexology session, the body experiences a release of muscle tension, and allows relaxation to spread throughout the body. Reflexology also helps the body to release endorphins, which are the body's natural pain killers. Reflexology session gives deep relaxation, which in turn allows stress to leave the body, which results in less dis-ease in the body.

Reflexology improves circulation, and cleans out toxins and impurities from our bodies more efficiently. Organs involved in elimination are our kidneys and skin, and reflexology helps them work more efficiently. When the body's systems are more in balance, it results in revitalised energy, and such the immune system works better.

Two techniques you might want to try to ease discomfort and stress associated with migraine headaches might be:

Foot Reflexology - Gentle squeezing of the toes and fingertips from one joint to another (for 1 -2 minutes, for 10 times) stimulates reflexes for release of endorphins which provides relief from migraine pain caused due to changes in blood flow in vessels of head. Pressing on padded portion of foot i.e. below 2nd & 3rd toes provide relief from migraine eye pain.

If the feet are not available, try Hand Reflexology - Gently squeezing fingertips and thumb for 10 to 30 seconds at a time provides non-invasive and quick relief. Kneading the top and bottom of thumb and fingertips to the middle knuckle releases facial tension. Squeezing on webbed portion of palm i.e. between index and middle finger alleviates eye pain or visual discomfort due to migraine.

Extra Tip - Drinking a glass of water after a session will help to ease the healing process and rid the body of any buildup of toxins released by the working the reflex points.

Reflexology is gentle and non-invasive. Anyone can have reflexology - there are no age barriers. In fact older people can benefit greatly from it.

If you suffer from Migraines Headaches, why not give Reflexology a try - you have nothing to lose except your headache.
