Water Pollution Problems: A Real Issue

Water pollution has always been a major problem to the environment. With industrialization in major areas and urban cities growing the water around them just keeps getting polluted. The sad part about the whole ordeal is that water pollution can be prevented in a lot of cases.

A lot of water pollution is caused by factories near rivers and lakes doing illegal dumping. This hurts wildlife because the pollution will flow down the river hurting plants and animals. In some cases it can be fatal.

Another big form of water pollution comes from fisherman and yacht owners. People who are just out to enjoy the sun will throw their waste overboard or have a leaky engine. A lot of them don't care because it doesn't usually directly effect how their day is going to turn out.

The nice thing is that if your boat is caught illegally dumping or not meeting basic standards you can be forced to pay a large fine. By putting laws such as these into effect water pollution has decreased some. However, it still isn't anywhere nears what it needs to be.

There have also been rules and regulations given to transport lines, especially concerning fuel tankers. When a fuel tanker ends up sinking it releases thousands upon thousands of gallons of fuel into the ocean. This fuel gets all over marine life and can cause serious damage to beaches and coral.

Another type of water pollution comes from farmers. When they spray their fields the fertilizer and insecticides can soak into the ground and get caught in a water system or river. This will then in turn hurt plant and animal life because the waterways are being poisoned.

If you think water pollution doesn't affect you then you are wrong. The pollution ends up hurting nature and poisoning fish that we may eat. On a more direct approach it can even pollute drinking water.

With so many bad side effects of water pollution it is a wonder that there isn't more being done to prevent it. The general public needs to learn more information about it so that they can learn to fight it and keep the waters clean.

Should Society Allow Euthanasia Or Assisted Suicide?

There is no doubt that convictions and opinions regarding the fact that no one is given the right to take a person's life. The reasons of the said argument may be religious, political, and medical but what is important is the preservation of life except when inevitable circumstances need otherwise. This paper will tackle how euthanasia or assisted suicide was viewed by the society in general. It will also discuss why euthanasia is advantageous and disadvantageous for a person who needs the same.

Euthanasia was known as mercy killing because of its characteristic as an assisted suicide. Knowing the history of the mercy killing will add our knowledge of the same but not really augment the value of our arguments on both sides. In places like Germany which was once ruled by Adolf Hitler, euthanasia was greatly followed which basically gives permission to end the life of patients who are suffering from painful ailments. There are rules in order to permit euthanasia in the context of permitting to destroy a life that is unworthy of life. These primary rules include the presence of advisory board that will review each case of mercy killing, the permission on the part of the patient to withdraw such request for assisted suicide and mercy killing must be done under prudent and controlled conditions. It is also necessary that legal protection be given to the physician who assisted the patient to die.

But prior to the said situation in Germany, ancient historical accounts on euthanasia already exist to haunt the society. The Greek Physician named Hippocrates who existed for about 400 B. C. ago gave an oath pertaining to the dis-allowance of giving medicine that could end a life that is unworthy life. From 14th century up to 20th century, the English Common Law also regarded mercy killing as improper and that any one who assisted suicide will be considered as guilty of murder as principal. During the 19th century, it was even a rule in both American and English laws that criminals or prisoners who asked another person to assist him for suicide will be tried for murder despite the pending schedule for execution. But at present time, these rules against euthanasia is being reviewed and studied due to the advent of convincing and powerful arguments that supported mercy killing.

Should Society Allow Euthanasia Or Assisted Suicide?

The historical standpoint of euthanasia is the Hippocratic Oath which sided on patient care no matter what the consequences may be. However, as time goes by, to die with dignity is what some patients cry when suffering painful illness. As such, the advent on ethics of patients care has been reviewed to give way for patients will. As for political sides, the Republicans in the United States are against mercy killing while the Democrats support it.

The disadvantages of euthanasia rest on the physical and spiritual well-being of a person. In order to preserve life no matter how unworthy it may be is the primary and indispensable rule. First, we cannot equate the life of man with the life of an animal. If euthanasia is being carried for the benefit of animals then men should not experience the same treatment for they are more valuable than animals. Second, euthanasia is immoral for Catholics or other religious beliefs. Preserving the life of an ailing patient is an answer to God's commandment that we should love one another no matter what. However, we should also consider a situation wherein there is no other cure for a patient who suffers painfully due to an illness. Sometimes, assisting a patient who suffers painfully of an illness is something that his heart wishes.

In line with these, we must be aware of the abuses on the right to die. In Holland for example, mercy killing is often misused as the duty to die. Out of personal interests, many patients were killed in the guise of euthanasia making the victims helpless to fight for their lives. Some families of these patients were not consulted prior to the act of mercy killing. So then, this is the basic disadvantage of euthanasia that plagued the society in general.

Third, euthanasia comes in three forms which are voluntary, non-voluntary and involuntary of which sometimes done improperly. There is no problem with voluntary euthanasia for the patient is the one who requested for mercy killing. The suffering of the patient may be unbearable such that mercy killing was requested. On the other hand, non-voluntary euthanasia is the worst of all forms of mercy killing. In that case, euthanasia is a time wherein a person has not been consulted for his or her death and is unaware to the intents of the attending doctor to do so. There is no consent on the part of the victim regarding his impending assisted suicide as it was done and decided in exclusion of the patient himself. This kind of behaviour is not acceptable as it violates the ethical standard of patient care. What is the use of medical intervention when patients are not given the chance to know its plight in the hands of the attending physician? There is none. The only thing that the patient could feel is confusion in addition to the pain that he suffered while having such illness. All these situations happen in Northern Territories in Australia and Netherlands due to the legalization of euthanasia in those areas. In connection with that, Alonzo stated that:

" Non-voluntary euthanasia is when an person utilizes non-verbal communication (such as mentioning that one would like to try a different cure but rolls his or her eyes at the contemplation) to articulate one's desire to die; thus death is approved out by the attending physician in order to carry out the alleged desire of the patient ". In this case, it is obvious that the patient is being denied of the right to speak up for its own fate. If almost all practices of euthanasia are done in this way, then it must be stopped."

On the other hand, there are also reliable advantages of euthanasia. Those patients who are suffering from terminal illnesses may experience pain in facing the same until it kills them. The thought of undergoing such a difficult situation could lead to the physician-assisted suicide or euthanasia for the patient to be freed from such a difficult process. Such a frightening situation alone could make a patient resort to mercy killing as decided with the family. In this case, there are two questions that should be considered. First, whether or not a person should be handed assistance in killing itself and second, whether or not the same person should be forced to suffer the pain and indignity due to the terminal illness.

Based on conscience and humanitarian reasons and aside from religious beliefs, it is not proper to force an already suffering patient to take the pain of a terminal illness. If there are others means to help the patient, it should be done right away. When all else are being considered and that it was found out that the patient will certainly die, then the patient must be allowed to secure a mercy killing procedure. If the patient is too weak to ask for mercy killing, then that is the time that the family of the patient will decide together with the attending physician. It is too useless for the patient to live a little longer when indignity is the equivalent. Hence, it is the responsibility of the attending physician to use all sensible and ethical means to end the unworthy suffering of the patient.

Another question is that, is mercy killing a helpful practice? The answer is in the positive. This is because not all situations require following religious and moral ends when the result is useless. For example, a patient who painfully suffers a terminal illness could have earned his dignity if euthanasia was done in his favor. We cannot simply bear the suffering of a patient that is waiting for his eventual death in the worst situation. After all, the patient will die no matter what. Assisted death is proper only when the patient is too weak to take active steps to end his life. Those patients that can still bear the suffering may not be offered mercy killing so as to avoid misuse of the practice. The disability of patients who are suffering terminal illness must not prevent their will to end their painful experience. They must be assisted in the name of fairness and equity.

Another argument is that, mercy killing can only affect one person and it is not reasonable that other people will prevent the same. Anyway, the person who requested for mercy killing wanted it to happen in order to ease the pain. The opinions of other people regarding the morality and practicability of euthanasia do not matter when the patient who is suffering pain decided that such step should be taken in his favor. While it is true that we do not have the right take one's life, it is also acceptable that we do not have the right to let a person suffer from indescribable pain due to terminal illness. If fairness and dignity are the things that make a society intact, then why should we allow a patient to earn indignity due to a terminal illness? Our responsibility is to weight things and apply logic and reason aside from understanding the whole problem. Without doing so, we will lose the very essence of upholding the laws and implementing justice and equity. It is unjust to force a patient to suffer pain when he can no longer bear it while being alive. Thus, euthanasia or assisted suicide must rescue such patient.

Religious groups will always opine that euthanasia is immoral. Politicians are also in the hot seat to debate on the legality and necessity of mercy killing. The society as a whole is still trying to study the subject since it was never an easy or common practice. In addition, there are things that must be considered in arguing about euthanasia. First, is the will of the patient to die amidst the painful suffering of a terminal illness and second, is the ethical standard on patient care. The two topics are difficult to reconcile since there are advantages and disadvantages of euthanasia. The primary disadvantage of mercy killing is the fact that it has been misused and abused by the people who are involved in it. However, mercy killing is very important just to help a patient that is suffering pain due to terminal illness. It is practical to end a life of a patient that suffers too much pain that proves to be unbearable. But this should be done honestly by the attending physician for the Hippocratic Oath which states that mischievous acts against patients should not be done is still enforced even up to this present time. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the people involved on euthanasia to use all reasonable ideas and moral standards to conduct the same.

When you think about the foods that you typically eat, you probably think about the unhealthy fast food, prepared meals that are frozen and full of preservatives, or the sweets that are full of fats and sugars. These kinds of foods, while typical for many, are only recent additions to the human diet. In fact, when you look back in ancient times, many of the foods we eat today didn't even exist.

In many cases, foods eaten during Biblical times were much healthier, as they were organically grown and never eaten to excess. Organically grown is somewhat of a trendy buzzword today. It is "cool" to eat organic foods that are grown without hormones or pesticides. During the Bible times, people had no choice but to eat organic foods. There was nothing else available.

Animals that were killed for food were always free ranging. They were never injected with hormones or antibiotics, and they were always lean. Of course, back then, most people didn't even eat meat at every meal because it wasn't as plentiful, and because the Bible actually states that an excess of eating meat will make a person sick. The meat they did eat was usually limited to fish, sheep, and some types of fowl. Pigs were considered unclean.

When meat was not available, the people got their protein from other sources. Nuts and soybeans were important in their diet. We now know today that soy is extremely healthy and provides a good source of lean protein. Nuts are also very good for the body. While they do contain fat, they have the "right" kind of fat.

Yogurt was also eaten during this time, although it is not the same kind of yogurt that comes flavored in neat little packages that we eat today. It contained no preservatives and no sugar. It often was derived from goat milk and was curdled. This was also known as cheese during the time.

When looking at grains and vegetables, it is important to point out that the people during this time ate what was native to their land. There was no importing or exporting of goods. Eating foods that were native to the land also meant that many people worked hard for their food, often farming their own crops. Popular vegetables and fruits included figs, pomegranates, olives (which most people ate on a daily basis), and apricots. Some studies actually suggest that the famed apple that temped Eve was actually not an apple at all, since it was not native to the area. Instead it was an apricot.

Of course, grains were very important to the diet during this time. People used barley and wheat to make bread and other grain products. It contained no preservatives, salt, and no sugar. If sweetness was needed, then local honey was used. Fat was forbidden, especially animal fat. However, olive oil was used when cooking and making food. It was plentiful and nutritious as well.

It is easy to see how much our diets have changed through the years. During Biblical times, people just did not have the choices as we do today. They ate when they needed to eat and did not overindulge or eat unhealthy foods.

In 1920, radio was first developed, primarily for use by the military, strictly for sendingHistory of the Media - Old Radios messages from one location to another. David Sternoff, the then-president of RCA, first had the idea to sell radio sets to consumers, or what were then called radio receivers. However, consumers needed a reason to buy radios, so RCA was the first to set up radio stations all over the country. Between 1920 and 1922, 400 radio stations were set up, starting with KBKA in Pittsburgh. Stations were also set up by universities, newspapers, police departments, hotels, and labor unions.

By 1923, there were 600 radio stations across the United States, and million worth of sets had been sold.

The biggest difference in radio before and after 1923 was that the first advertising was not heard on the radio until 1923. RCA at the time was made up of four companies:

AT&T

General Electric

*

United Fruit

*

Westinghouse

United Fruit was one of the first global corporations, and one of the first to advertise on the radio. The AT&T division of RCA first thought about selling time on the air to companies, which marked the start of "toll broadcasting." WEAF was the first station to operate this way, causing widespread outrage, and accusation of "polluting the airwaves."

Because of this controversy, the practice of selling advertising time was called "trade name publicity." Sponsors linked their name with a program on the air, rather than advertising a specific product in a 30 second "commercial" as we know it today.

Why did AT&T decide to experiment with charging companies for air time?

AT&T was not making any money from broadcasting at the time since they only made transmitters, not receivers. They only made money when new radio stations bought the equipment required to broadcast. They did not make money from consumers buying radios.

AT&T also started the practice of paying performers for their time on the air, rather than only volunteers, which was standard practice for radio content up until that point.

The first radio network

In 1926, RCA set up the first radio network, NBC. They decided it was more effective and efficient to produce shows in New York City, and then link the main radio station with stations all across the country, connected by AT&T (another RCA company) phone lines. (Now television networks are linked by satellite to their affiliates).

This was the beginning of the network affiliates system. The ideal network makes sure everyone in the country is capable of listening to their signal. NBC at the time had two philosophies:

Radio content was a "public service," whose function was to sell radios.

*

Radio content was designed to generate income from advertising.

History of the Media In 1927, the second network was formed. It was CBS, started by William Paley. Paley was the first to think that networks could make money strictly from advertising, not even getting involved in the sales of radios. Like AT&T, CBS did not make radios. From the start, they made their money from selling advertising.

The rising of radio networks caused the Radio Act of 1927 to be passed, which established the FRC, or what is now known as the FCC, to allocate broadcast licenses. The need for such an organization was brought on by the fact that airwaves are limited resources, and broadcasting itself is a scarce public resource. By the 1930's, the structure of radio have been set by the commercial format, although advertising never dominated radio like it would television later on.

In the 1920's and '30's, radio programs were divided into two groups. Sponsored shows, which had advertisers, and unsponsored shows, which did not. The radio station paid for the unsponsored shows. The sponsored shows, on the other hand, were created entirely by the company sponsoring the show; advertisers were totally in charge of the radio station's content. The content became advertising. Radio set the precedent for television, in that the same companies that controlled radio early on went on to control television.

Soon thereafter, television inherited the structure of radio. In the '40's, during the rise of television, RCA also held a monopoly on all television sets sold. By 1945-1955, advertising had taken over all of television. Television was organized around the premise of selling things. The entire television industry was creating a political atmosphere of suspicion and fear. Senator Joseph McCarthy, the founder of McCarthyism, which was based on the fear of Communism, and the HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee, began to question people involved in television about their beliefs and associations.

What affected television in its early stages?

*

Politics (McCarthyism / HUAC).

*

Blacklists: From almost the inception of television, many writers, directors, and actors were considered to be pro-Communist and/or un-American.

Certain topics were totally off-limits at the time for television, particularly issues of race relations in the 1960's. Overall, networks were not happy with the political situation for television in the 1960's, both in terms of the blacklists, and of the fact that when every show had one sponsor, that sponsor controlled the entire program. Networks preferred to control the program, by way of moving to multiple sponsors/advertisers, where networks would retain control of the show, and advertisers would buy time in between the programming.

In the 1950's, networks decided to eliminate the practice of sponsors controlling the shows with a move to spot selling, or advertisements between programs, as we know it today. What caused the move to spot selling?

Discovery of fraud in the quiz shows on television. Quiz shows were extremely popular at the time, and were liked by the networks, the sponsors, and the viewers alike. It turned out, however, that quiz shows were largely fixed. Charles Van Doren on "21" became a huge star due to his repeated wins, until it came out that the whole thing had been fixed. In the case of "The ,000 Question," the owner of Revlon was personally hand-selecting the winners and losers on the show.

It was becoming financially difficult for just one advertiser to support an entire show.

Around this same time came the inception of ratings to measure a show's popularity. Ratings, quite simply, measure the number of people watching a show. To understand why ratings are so important, it's crucial to understand how the television industry works, through three questions, and their respective answers:

Who owns television? [The networks]

2.

What is sold on television? [Viewer's time, not television shows]

3.

Who are the customers of television? [Advertisers, not viewers]

This might be a counterintuitive concept for some. The networks, which own television, areHistory of the Media - Old Television the buyers of shows, not the sellers. On the other hand, they sell our eyeballs, so to speak, to advertisers. Networks want the maximum possible profit from buying and selling time, both viewers' time, and advertisers' time.

The primary measure of television ratings, which determine the price of that time being bought and sold, is AC Nielsen, an independent company which provides information as to who watches what on television. Currently, about 4,000 households are used to represent the national viewing of television. In the 1980's, only 1,200 households were used. Some households have an electronic device installed on their television which tracks what they watch, while others keep a diary of viewing habits.

There are two measures for determining a show's audience. One is the rating, and the other is the share.

Rating: Percentage of total homes with televisions tuned into a particular show.

*

Share: Percentage of those watching television at a particular time who are tuned into a particular show.

The share is always greater than the rating. Ratings are more important for advertisers, and share is more important to the networks.

Example:

Total households with televisions: 150 million

*

Total households watching television at 8pm on Monday nights: 90 million

*

Total households watching American Idol at 8pm on Monday nights: 45 million

*

Therefore: Rating: 30, Share: 50

It's important to note how many factors can skew the results. Shows cost producers much more than the networks typically pay them for those shows. The way for producers to make money is by getting the networks to renew the show, in order to have a shot at making money from syndication on other channels, also knows as reruns. That is the case when individual stations (say for example, the Miami affiliate of ABC wants to carry Seinfeld), buy the rights to a show from the producers of that show. Shows that last only one season, for the most part, lose millions of dollars. One of the most important factors in whether shows will be renewed or not is their rating.

This brings us to how ratings can be skewed. For example, if a show has a 20 share, and it needs a 25 share to be renewed for another season, what might the producers do? In principle, they need to convince another 5% of the people watching television when their show is on to watch their show; this is no simple task, as that involves convincing millions of people. However, since the ratings are based on those 4,000 Nielsen households, that means that they could convince just 200 Nielsen households to watch their show, which would increase the share from 20 to 25. This is why Nielsen households must be kept totally secret from the networks. When the Nielsen households have leaked to the networks, one way which they got people to watch their show was by offering viewers a small sum of money for filling out a survey about a commercial which they were told would play only during a particular show. Since they had to watch that channel while their show was on, this would boost the share.

Once ratings are determined, advertising prices are set by two factors:

* The size of the audience.

* The demographics (income, age, gender, occupation, etc) of the audience.

In short, the job of television programs is to collect our time as a product, which they then sell to advertisers. Programs have to support the advertising, delivering viewers in the best possible state of mind for buying when the time for the commercials comes, which brings us to the Golden Age of Television.

The 1950's are considered the "Golden Age of Television." During this time, something called the "Anthology Series," where different actors each week took part in a show gained History of the Media - I Love Lucypopularity across the board...that is, with everyone except for advertisers. The anthology series format was not right for advertisers, as it covered topics which involved psychological confrontations which did not leave the viewers in the proper state of mind for buying the products shown to them between program segments. The subject matter of the anthology series was of the type that undermined the ads, almost making them seem fraudulent.

This brought up the question of what to network executives actually want shows to do? The answer is not to watch a program that makes them feel good, makes them laugh, or excites them, but rather to watch the television for a set amount of time. With so many new shows being proposed, standards began to be intentionally, or unintentionally, laid out for what shows could and couldn't do. Risks could only be taken at the beginning and/or end of shows. Laugh tracks were conceived to tell the audience when to laugh. Programs began being tested with audiences prior to being put on television and/or radio. Show writers now had to write shows that would test well.

Naturally, this caused many of the same elements and themes to appear in all shows. This was the beginning of recombinant television culture, where the same elements are endlessly repeated, recombined, and mixed.

This same culture is what perpetuated the idea that people watch television, not specific shows. While people certainly choose to watch certain shows instead of others, people less commonly choose to watch television instead of other things. People watch television. Regardless of what was on, television viewing rates were extremely stable.

Illegal Immigration to Canada

Illegal immigrants are people who are not legally permitted to live in a country. Every year, hundreds and thousands of people attempt to enter Canada illegally from Hungary, Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Panama, Central America, Eastern Europe, Ireland and other countries. Both the United States and Canada face serious illegal immigration problems. Failed refugee claimants and people with expired visas are illegal immigrants. It is believed that about 8% of foreigners attempt to enter Canada illegally. Another 64,000 people (8%) have expired visas. Some people enter the country as undocumented persons because of economic reasons.

As per an immigration report in 2003, the estimated number of undocumented people living in Canada is somewhere between 100,000 to 200,000. A few illegal immigrants exhaust all avenues of becoming legal and continue to live, work and contribute to Canada's economy for long. Increased security protection in United States following September 11, 2001 has also resulted in an increase in the number of illegal immigrants to Canada.

Illegal immigration to Canada can be reduced by verifying social insurance numbers. In Canada, a social insurance number beginning with the number nine shows that the person holding it is not a citizen. The expiration date must be verified to make sure that the number is still valid. Human Resources and Skills Development Canada can support problems in this region.

When compared to United States, illegal immigration to Canada is less. One can enter Canada either illegally, or as a refugee, citizen, or permanent immigrant. Entering illegally should not be necessary in Canada, because the country has the most liberal immigration and refugee entry laws in the world.

For political reasons, the Canadian government took the initiative to legalize undocumented people by granting amnesty. Illegal immigrants in Canada are granted permanent immigrant status during these amnesties. People who commit serious crimes are unlikely to get amnesty.

A Vessel of Honor Serving Through Stewardship

Last time we talked about being vessels of honor through submission. We stated that submission, an often misunderstood word, is required from God so that He can get the very best out of us as we submit to Him, our mates and others in authority. When we submit as unto the Lord He can use us mightily for His kingdom.

Serving through stewardship allows God to show himself through three areas of our lives: our time, our gifts/talents and our treasure.

TIME
God wants us to be good stewards of our time. Time management is not just keeping busy but includes finding God's focus for you - choosing a direction and moving ahead to accomplish your goals. Managing time is one of the most difficult skills for us to develop because it takes maximum effort and realistic planning. We cannot allow others to decide what our priorities should be and make our schedules for us. If we use small portions of time faithfully we can accomplish many things.

What should our day include? Time for proper nourishment and exercise, rest, work and time exclusively for the Lord. If we are honest, we might get at least one or two of those in per day but rarely all of them. We also must focus daily on meaningful time for vital relationships - our spouse, children, etc. Then we cannot forget that we must be good stewards over the time we spend doing spiritual things. Are we feeding our spiritual man with Bible Study, Sunday School, etc. Are we not attending those things because we waste time on Sunday mornings or Wednesday evenings?

The reality is that we have time for the things we want to have time for. We would drop the laundry, the dishes, washing the car - anything if someone says to us, "Hey, I've got free tickets to the Bahamas but you must leave tomorrow!" We would find a babysitter quick, fast and in a hurry! We would call our jobs and suddenly feel sick (Ooops, I'm sorry, you wouldn't do that....would you??) We would rearrange our schedules because it's something WE wanted to do! When some of us were in the world we didn't care what time we came in from work, how tired we were, we took a quick shower, laid out our clothes and pressed on to the party! But now that we're saved, sanctified, and fire baptized on Wednesday after work we are sooooo tired. It's too late, it gets dark too fast, I've got to eat, I've got to rest, I've got stuff to do around the house...the list goes on and on. I wonder what God thinks about our whining! When it comes to spiritual things we don't have the time! But let the hell hounds start on our trail and we're calling around to all the saints - is there Bible study tonight? Where's the pastor? Can somebody pray for me? We've got all the time in the world suddenly available.

We must ask God to help us plan our time wisely so that we can use it effectively not only to get the daily mundane things done that we need - but that we are available to serve Him, to hear from Him and to fellowship with Him and His children.

Politics - The Role of Mass Media

The Internet is one of the greatest tools against censorship. Bloggers can get information out within seconds using either Twitter, Facebook, personal blogs or reporting in little videos that are afterward shared on YouTube.

Social media has changed politics in many ways. Bad words in any small land community can become national television news when someone decides to share an interview through YouTube. Prime Minister Gordon Brown discovered that during the recent elections when he forgot to remove a microphone that afterward showed inappropriate words about an inquisitive lady that asked questions he didn't like.

It's both good and bad. Bad for journalists who want to keep copyright to materials they have used, but certainly good for democracy since events can be shared all over the globe without any time delays for media to reach other parts of the world. It is a big challenge for established news media who were used to being the only source people listened to, and now they have to adapt to the fact that we are all journalists in one form or another.

Much more than this, it is also a challenge for each of us because we must become better at selecting between good and bad information. Once something is put in writing it gains acceptance in a new way. People forget their critical thinking once they see something that appears credible - and in that lies a great challenge for politicians also.

The Obama campaign was one of the first Presidential campaigns to include the internet, and many of us still regularly receive updates through Twitter. President Obama knows there is a second campaign to be won also. Therefore his tools are still well-established, and kept functional.

In much the same way, campaign funds will be better used when we realize that we don't necessarily need to cut lots of trees to get functional campaigns running. Campaigning through the internet is much more friendly towards the environment, and gives a greater effect than what we have ever seen before.

What is truly encouraging about all of this is that as the internet spreads even into dictatorships it will be far more difficult for tyrants to brainwash their people. Unfortunately, however, we have seen that some requests for shutting down the internet have been followed by certain ISPs. One example is China that didn't want access through Google Gmail to the internet for their people. All such activities will be impossible to dictate as the internet spreads, and the freedom that follows.
